5-day Wilderness First Responder Course
Overview
The Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the ideal medical training for leaders in remote areas including outdoor educators, guides, military, professional search and rescue teams, researchers, and those involved in disaster relief. This comprehensive and practical curriculum includes the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. Emphasis is placed on risk management, prolonged care, advanced treatment, evacuations, and leadership. This course is taught by professional instructors with significant patient care and back-country experience.
Dreamland Safari Tours is proud to regularly host Wilderness First Responder Courses in collaboration with excellent WFR instructors via Backcountry Pulse.
Please note: the course that we host is the accelerated 5-Day WFR which requires significant independent pre-course study before the onsite learning, as well as a required live 2-hour virtual session. This course is ideal for busy folks with limited time to spend in the classroom, but it entails ~30 hours of independent study prior to your first day of class. Upon registering for the course you will receive pre-course study materials; to successfully complete this 5-Day WFR, you need to have read and understood the pre-course materials as well as completed your on-line assignments prior to the first day of class.
Course fees include 5 days of hands-on instruction and all course materials. Course fees do NOT include Kanab lodging or meals. If you are looking to recertify your current Wilderness First Responder certification, please contact us to discuss.
Prerequisites
Students must be at least 18 years of age to participate in this course.
To successfully complete this 5-Day WFR, you need to have read and understood the textbook as well as completed your on-line assignments prior to the first day of class.
PLEASE NOTE: Typical pre-course work is ~30 hours of independent study. This pre-course work is mandatory.

Key Topics Covered
The WFR curriculum includes a broad range of medical skills and topics, including patient assessment, CPR, AED, and basic life support skills. Students also learn how to effectively manage respiratory and cardiac emergencies, shock, head injuries, altered mental states, wounds and burns, infection, musculoskeletal injuries, dislocations, spinal injuries, allergic reactions, toxins, stings, poisoning, environmental emergencies such as hypothermia, heat illness, lightning, drowning, submersion and medical emergencies such as severe asthma, abdominal pain, and diabetes. Thursday is our 12-hour experiential rescue scenario day with full patient assessments, decision-making and evacuations. Lodging & Meals
Students are responsible for their own accommodation and meals during the duration of the course. Kanab offers many hotel options at a wide range of price points. RV Parks, developed campgrounds, and BLM lands for free and legal dispersed camping are also available.
Kanab also has a wide variety of dining options ranging from award-winning restaurants to several food trucks and two well-stocked grocery stores.

Course Completion and Grades:
Successful completion with certification is based on 100% attendance, satisfactory performance on all assigned homework and quizzes, as well as demonstrated proficiency with hands on practical skills. Students must also obtain an 80% or better on the final written exam.
Certification:
Upon successful completion, students will receive Wilderness First Responder, Anaphylaxis, and Healthcare Provider level CPR certifications. All certifications are valid for three years.
Backcountry Pulse programs follow the latest internationally accepted wilderness medicine guidelines and are updated regularly to reflect current evidence-based practices. Backcountry Pulse certifications are globally recognized and meet international standards with reciprocity across wilderness medicine education providers.
Recertification:
Recertification can be earned at any time during the three years following your course. Several different recertification options exist, including the Wilderness Advanced First Aid Course, WAFA-to-WFR Bridge Course, or the Wilderness First Responder Recertification Course. Students that have a current WFR from another provider may recertify with us. Please contact us to ensure approval.
WFR-specific Cancellation Policy:
- For all courses cancelled more than 60 days from course start date a full refund minus $50 registration fee.
- For cancellations less than 60 days, but more than 4 weeks from course start date students receive a 50% refund.
- For cancellations less than 4 weeks from course start date there is no refund.
