Traveling solo can be magical. The wide-open road, the stillness of the desert, and the freedom to follow your own rhythm — wake when you want, eat when you want, see what you want. But solo travel also comes with challenges, such as single supplement fees or limited tour options.

Here’s the good news: Dreamland is solo-traveler friendly. Why? Because we’ve been there ourselves. So we’ve built our tours with solo adventurers in mind. Yes, our guided trips do require a two-person minimum, but we offer flexible ways for solo travelers to join groups, avoid extra surcharges, and still experience our epic desert adventures.

Since 2001, Dreamland Safari Tours has been creating unforgettable desert experiences that, as a solo traveler, you can feel confident booking. Here’s what you need to know.

How Dreamland Makes Solo Travel Easier

At Dreamland, we believe in being upfront — no hidden rules, no fine print. Our group tours do require at least two guests to run, but solo travelers have plenty of flexible ways to join in. Here’s how:

  • Join an existing group that already has at least one guest booked. (Just give us a call; we’ll be happy to work with you)
  • Pick a nearby date if your first choice isn’t running yet.
  • Choose a different tour that’s already confirmed on your preferred day.
  • Pay for two seats (or book private) if you’d like a guaranteed departure. (For example: Peekaboo Slot Canyon = $119 for one seat, $238 for two, but if someone else ends up joining, we’ll waive the second-seat charge, plus taxes & fees.)
  • Add yourself to a no-obligation, no-cost waitlist — we’ll notify you as soon as the tour becomes available.

Pro tip for solo travelers: During our busiest seasons (April–May and Sept–Oct), or on popular tours like Peekaboo (half-day) and White Pocket (full-day), your chances of joining a group are highest. Sometimes spots open up even the day before!

And you can always call us at 801-251-6036. Our team loves helping solo travelers design the perfect Kanab-area adventure, find the best tour fit, and even recommend other experiences you can enjoy on your own. It’s part of why thousands of guests have repeatedly rated us the #1 tour company on TripAdvisor.

How the Solo Traveler Booking Process Works Online

If you find booking online easier, reserving a tour as a solo traveler with Dreamland is simple and transparent. Here’s how it works:

  • Choose your tour and select “Book.” Pick the adventure you’re most excited about.

  • If the tour is already running, you’re in! Your reservation will go through immediately, even if you’re booking solo.

  • If no tour is available yet for that day, your booking becomes a “request.” A 50% deposit will be placed on hold (not charged), and our team will be notified.

  • Our team follows up via email with your options. That might mean joining a different tour on the same day, shifting to a nearby date, paying for two seats, or being added to a waitlist at no cost.

This way, you’ll never be left guessing. While we can’t guarantee that your preferred tour will run on your exact date, we’ll always give you clear options and work with you to find the best possible fit for your travels.

Tailored for Solo Travelers: Our Overnight & Backpacking Adventures

Our overnight and backpacking trips are different — they’re designed with solo travelers in mind. You can book right away without waiting for a two-person minimum. These journeys are some of the most rewarding ways to experience the desert, offering time to savor sunsets, sunrises, and some of the best dark skies in the country. Many guests even discover lasting friendships along the way.

Our Overnight Trips

You don’t need to bring a thing. We take care of the gear, meals, camp setup, and transportation. Two of our most popular overnights are:

  • White Pocket Overnight: Watch the sun sink behind Golden Eye as dinner simmers under the stars. Stretch out beneath the Milky Way as it glides overhead, then wake to sunrise setting the Martian landscape ablaze before tucking into a cowboy breakfast. Otherworldly, serene, and unforgettable.
  • Toroweap Overnight: Perched on the “edge of the world,” Toroweap is one of the Grand Canyon’s rawest, most awe-inspiring overlooks. Stand cliffside with 3,000 feet of sheer air beneath you, the Colorado River a whisper far below. Here you’ll have time to watch the canyon glow at sunset, shimmer under a canopy of stars, and ignite again at sunrise — all without the strain of navigating its rugged, remote access roads.

Our Backpacking Trips

Backpacking is a little more involved, but we make it easy. You’ll bring your personal essentials from our gear list, and we provide the expensive equipment (like tents and cooking gear). We also take care of all the logistics, meals, and provide expert guides to keep you safe on the trail. Trips include epic routes like the Coyote Gulch, Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim, Paria Canyon, Buckskin Gulch, among others.

These epic multi-day trips allow you to go deep into the desert without the stress of planning or outfitting. Your only job will be to take it all in — and capture memories you’ll never forget.

Best Dreamland Day Tours for Solo Travelers

As far as our day tours go, solo travelers have the easiest time joining our most popular tours, since these run more often and already attract plenty of small groups, couples, and other solos. We always encourage you to book the tour you’re most excited about, but if that isn’t available, these guest favorites are great options:

  • White Pocket Day Tour Our most popular full-day adventure, with otherworldly “Martian” rock formations.
  • Peekaboo Slot Canyon Tours (There are several options to choose from) These are our most popular half-day tours, featuring a moody, photogenic canyon that feels like a hidden treasure.
  • Wave Conditional Day Tour A full-day tour that gives you a chance at the world-famous Wave — with spectacular alternatives if we don’t win a permit.

Because these tours run so frequently, they’re often the easiest, most reliable, and economical way for solo adventurers to hop in and join a group.

When Is the Best Time of Year for Solo Travelers to Join?

Our busiest seasons are Spring and Fall (April–May, Sept–Oct). Planning your trip during these windows gives you the best chance of joining an existing group — and they also happen to be the best times to visit the Kanab area. The weather is typically sunny and moderate, with warm days, cool nights, and perfect conditions for hiking, photography, and stargazing.

If your schedule is flexible, arriving with a few days of leeway can open even more options to join a group. And remember, our team is always happy to discuss availability and help you plan the best adventure.

What to Expect: How Dreamland Supports Solo Travelers

If you’re unsure about joining a group tour, rest easy — our guides are experts at making everyone feel included. With just six guests per guide, you’ll enjoy a truly personalized experience. And because they’re passionate naturalists, our guides love bringing the desert to life with stories, history, and insights that make each place unforgettable.

But don’t just take our word for it — here’s what some of our solo travelers had to say:

“The Peekaboo Slot Canyon Tour with Brent as our guide was amazing!!! As a solo traveler with limited time in the area, the staff was great in continually communicating to find a tour that fit my circumstances.”

“This was the experience of a lifetime and an incredible birthday gift to myself. As a solo traveler, I felt safe and cared for the whole way—Ben was patient, knowledgeable, and even pointed out where to step on the tougher climbs. He took photos, carried my jacket, made sure I had plenty of water, and went out of his way to make the hike special. Dreamland made everything easy from booking to helpful tips before the trip. I would absolutely recommend them and book again without question.”

Angela B. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Dreamland made my solo trip even better by helping me connect with other small groups and saving me over $400. Sarah in the office was wonderful, and Brent’s passion and knowledge of the Kanab backcountry made the tour unforgettable. It’s hard to imagine a better experience.”
