Know that you want to have an epic day in Kanab but you can’t quite decide on one specific tour? The Guide’s Choice Tour is your answer.

Choosing the perfect tour for your party can be a difficult task, particularly if you are making plans far in advance and/or have multiple people in your group.  What’s the weather going to be like on your chosen date? Do you want to do more (or less) hiking than our tours typically offer? Are you a diehard photographer wanting to photograph a specific hard-to-get-to place at just the right time of day? Is there a place you want to explore that you don’t see offered as part of our standard tour destinations?

The Guide’s Choice Tour makes planning the ultimate guided adventure simple on your end: just book your preferred date and tell us in broad strokes what your perfect day in the desert looks like, or which specific place you absolutely have to see. We’ll put together a special itinerary just for your party – tailored specifically to your interests and priorities, and taking into account current weather and road conditions.

We are licensed and permitted to guide across most of the major areas of public lands in and around Kanab including sought-after spots such as Buckskin Gulch and the Great Chamber, but individual guest permit requirements apply for this tour as they do for any of our standard tours: if you’d like to visit permitted areas such as the Wave, South Coyote Buttes etc, standard permit processes apply.

We love the Guide’s Choice Tour because it allows us to plan an epic day for you in exactly the same way we like to plan fantastic outings when our friends and family come to visit us: by getting to know your preferences, and overlaying our local knowledge and best judgment to take you on a truly unique adventure.

This tour is by default a private tour. A typical Guide’s Choice Tour is a full day tour of up to 10 hours. We can accommodate longer itineraries and early departures / late returns for optimal photographic timing on this tour, though a surcharge may apply.

Price

Starting at $894 for a half day, or $1374 for a full day for up to six people (five people where permit restrictions apply). Larger groups can be accommodated.

These FAQs are specific to this tour. If you would like to view our general FAQs CLICK HERE.

1. How much hiking will I have to do to get to the Teepees?
The Teepees are among the most difficult hiking day tours that we offer.  To get to the North Teepees, which we consider the crown jewel of this tour, you will cover a minimum of 11-12 miles roundtrip; while there aren’t many big hills on the hike, there is a lot of varied terrain with small but steep ups and downs which easily add up to ~1000ft of vertical ascent if not more.  The Teepees Tour is an incredible outing but only recommended for experienced, fit hikers with a penchant for physical adventure.  Good footwear and a daypack to carry 3 liters of water are a must; trekking poles are recommended.

2. How much time is spent driving vs. hiking on this tour?
The Teepees Tour is a 10-hour tour and the drive to the trailhead takes about an hour one-way, so you can expect to spend 7-8 hours hiking, exploring, and eating lunch in the field.

3. How do the Teepees compare to the Wave?
The Teepees are shaped from the same 190-million-year-old Navajo Sandstone formation as the Wave, and the two spots are only a mile or two apart as the crow flies.  The colors, striations, and formations of the Teepees rival those at the Wave, there just isn’t yet an ultimate “famous” photograph from the Teepees – and not because the Teepees aren’t photogenic.  Did you know that the Wave was well known to locals but wasn’t “discovered” more broadly as a popular visitor destination until the mid-90s? We think that the Teepees are a lot like the Wave, pre-discovery.

4. I am staying in Page. Where can we meet?
We offer pick-up service to any hotel or vacation rental in Kanab, Utah, but we do not pick up in Page, Arizona. If you are staying in Page, we can arrange a meeting point halfway between Page and Kanab. Normally, this meeting point is at the intersection of Highway 89 and House Rock Valley Road, which is about 45 minutes west of Page, and is right on the way to the Teepees. Occasionally, we have to change this meeting point when the north end of House Rock Valley is too muddy to be passable.

If you book a 9 a.m. tour, that is the time the tour departs Kanab, Utah. We would leave at 9 a.m. and meet you at 9:45 a.m. at House Rock Valley. Keep in mind that Page is in Arizona, which does not observe daylight savings time. So from spring through fall, the time in Arizona is one hour earlier than in Utah, where our company operates. So if our tour left Kanab at 9 a.m. (Utah time) and met you at 9:45 a.m. (Utah time), this would be 8:45 a.m. Arizona time during daylight savings time, which starts sometime in early March and usually runs to the end of October.

5. Is there a bathroom at the Teepees?
There is a pit toilet at the trailhead, but there are no facilities of any kind on the hike. You may duck behind a tree or bush for privacy whenever necessary. Bury all solid waste. Guides carry toilet paper, hand wipes and plastic bags in each truck. Do not leave any trash on the ground. Paper must be bagged up and can be discreetly discarded into the trash bag at the truck.

6. Do you offer sunrise or sunset tours at the Teepees?
Golden hour at the Teepees is spectacular, but it is not for the faint of heart – due to the remoteness of the Teepees, catching golden hour requires either a difficult four mile off-trail hike in the dark, or an overnight at the Teepees.  We love desert adventure as much as we love photography, and we have the expertise and gear to make this unforgettable desert adventure happen. Call us at (435) 644-5506 to discuss custom options.
You may also want to consider our regularly scheduled White Pocket overnight trips that allow for sunrise, sunset and even night photography in an equally beautiful area .

7. Are drones allowed on this tour?
The Teepees are in a designated Wilderness Area so drones are not permitted on this tour.

Guest Experiences with Dreamland Safari

Steve was an awesome guide and we had a great time hiking White Pocket (Vermillion Cliffs) with him. He customized our hike and planned a great route for us. Since we liked birds he stopped at the California Condor viewing area for us. We got to see 900 year old drawings and then amazing views of the white pocket are from different angles. Lunch was yummy with fresh veggies, fruit and meat. Fantastic Day, highly recommend.

Best tour ever. Such a beautiful natural wonder! The journey there and back was also amazing. Andrea was an excellent guide pointing out all kinds of interesting features of the landscape. Her driving was swift and safe in a well maintained all wheel drive vehicle. I would not want to attempt this trip on my own even with a adequate all wheel drive vehicle. White Pocket itself is simply stunning. I would recommend this tour to anyone who appreciates natural wonders.

Took a tour of White Pocket with Dreamland at the end of April with Andrea as our tour guide. It was a great experience. White pocket is very difficult to get to – both in terms of terrain and directions. Having a guide to get you there safely, as well as give some interesting history and facts on the area was great. Would definitely recommend!

Bailey did a great job for our small group. My wife and I enjoyed everyone’s company as well as the good lunch prepared for us. It takes a while to get out to White Pocket, but you will be glad you made the effort to see this fascinating area.

Just completed a truly wonderful visit to White Pocket on a photo safari with Dreamland and AZ Highways Photo Tours. Dreamland’s outfitters were outstanding. Food was almost too good and plentiful. Their service and attention to detail is outstanding. Not sure when my next trip is with them but I’m already looking forward to it!
