These FAQs are specific to this tour. If you would like to view our general FAQs CLICK HERE.
1. Is the Great Chamber Adventure an easy hike?
The Great Chamber is not a long hike, but it does require a steep uphill climb in deep sand to gain the entrance to the Chamber. There is also a small fence to step over coming out of the parking area. You should be steady on your feet and feel confident in your ability to tackle a hard hiking effort for ~10-15 minutes.
2. Where exactly is the Great Chamber?
The Great Chamber is in the great Kanab area, on deep sand roads a few miles off the closest paved roads.
3. Is the Great Chamber good for photography? May I bring my tripod?
Yes! The Great Chamber is fantastic for photography. Landscape photographers will delight in early morning sun burst opportunities as the sand dune in the Great Chamber is bathed in a soft glow. Hobbyist photographers love the Chamber at all times of the day, including in the afternoon for wonderful and unique silhouette shots. For astro photographers, the Great Chamber is a cherished Milky Way location — best approached in the spring (May through July) when the Milky Way rises in such a way that it is beautifully framed in the Great Chamber’s opening. If you are interested in Great Chamber Milky Way photography, check out our premium Great Chamber Milky Way workshop with Cody York.
5. Are drones allowed on this tour?
Yes, drones are allowed on this tour, but the Great Chamber is not necessarily a good place to fly a drone. It is a singular spot and there may be other people in close proximity. When operating a drone on tours, please be mindful of other guests on the tour and other hikers who may be in the area. Others seek remote locations for the solitude. Please do not fly drones close to other people and limit the amount of time the drone is in the air. Always follow instructions from your guide.

About the Great Chamber in Kanab, Utah
Photographing the Great Chamber
The Great Chamber is positioned well for early-to-mid-morning sun. Proficient photographers may be able to capture beautiful sun burst images as the sun rises in the Great Chamber a few hours after sunrise proper. Later in the day and in the afternoon, backlighting can serve to create classic silhouette images. The Great Chamber has also become a sought-after prize for astrophotographers — capturing the Milky Way here requires careful planning and low-level lighting. If you are interested in astro photography in the Great Chamber, check out our Great Chamber Milky Way clinic with professional photographer Cody York.
Driving to the Great Chamber
The Great Chamber is located North of Kanab, miles from pavement. There is a maze of sand tracks crisscrossing the area; if you have a 4-wheel-drive high clearance vehicle and decide to attempt the drive out to the Great Chamber on your own, make sure you have good directions and a GPX file. In addition, carry the usual emergency kit (shovel, tow strap, tire compressor, GPS communication as well as water, food and layers to make it through a night should you get stranded) and be confident in your sand driving ability. If you have never aired down your tires before, this is not a place for you to attempt to drive to yourself.
The Hike to the Great Chamber
From the end of the sandy track to the Great Chamber itself is ~a third of a mile with 300ft of ascent. While the hike is short, it is steep and in deep sand. It’ll feel like a workout! If your balance isn’t impeccable, trekking poles (with rubber tips) are recommended.
Preserving the Great Chamber for Future Visitors
The Great Chamber and its singular sand dune are wind-carved. The rock is incredibly fragile; the dune itself is subject to a very slow process of healing & replenishment, as the wind carries sand grains to the center of the Great Chamber and deposits them on top of the dune. Please do not climb, walk or slide on the front of the dune (the dune’s front is the steep side that you first see when you walk up to the Great Chamber). Please avoid stepping on the crest of the dune and kicking sand down. We have seen the height of the dune decrease by 30+ft over the course of mere months, due to careless visitation. It takes all of us to do our part — otherwise, future visitors will end up standing on flat, compacted ground in a big alcove and the magic of the Great Chamber will be lost.
Sandboarding is NOT permitted in the Great Chamber under any circumstances.
