Hiking from one rim of the Grand Canyon to the other is an unbeatable adventure. The 14.5-mile journey across one of the planet’s most spectacular and demanding landscapes stands as a paramount bucket-list experience. 

In addition to the challenge of hiking the terrain itself, with its immense elevation changes and intense temperatures, there’s one critical challenge to overcome before you can start packing: securing a Rim-to-Rim permit.

Because Grand Canyon overnight permits are extremely competitive (and getting fiercer by the year), Dreamland Safari Tours offers a Pre-Permit Reservation System that simplifies the process so that you can focus on training while we handle the logistics.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about Rim-to-Rim permits, and how Dreamland helps you make it all happen.

Why You Need a Permit

All overnight Rim-to-Rim backpacking trips require a Grand Canyon Backcountry Permit, which limits the number of people camping in each backcountry “use area” per night.

Key regulations include:

• Stay limit: Two nights per campground during popular seasons (spring and fall). 
• Affiliated group rule: Only one permit per friend or club group in the same use area per night. 
• Group size: Maximum of 11 people total, including guides. Dreamland’s group trips include up to 9 guests + 2 guides. 
• Commercial use: Dreamland operates under a valid Commercial Use Authorization and follows all National Park Service regulations.

What if I want to hike Rim-to-Rim in one day?

If you plan to complete the Rim-to-Rim as a day hike without camping, you do not need a permit. However, commercial guiding is not allowed for Rim-to-Rim day hikes. Be aware that this is an extremely strenuous hike with massive elevation change and temperature swings — suitable only for ultra-experienced hikers in premium condition who are already well-seasoned in Grand Canyon hiking.

Most people prefer multi-day trips through the Canyon, not just because spreading out the hike is physically more manageable, but also because spending more time on the trail allows you to immerse yourself in the unique magic of this absolutely glorious place.

How the Permit Lottery Works

⭐ Good to know: Dreamland handles this entire process for you when you book through our Pre-Permit Reservation System.

The Grand Canyon issues backcountry permits through a monthly lottery system to ensure fairness.

Here’s how it works:

• Applications open about 4.5 months before your desired trip month and remain open for two weeks. 
• The lottery is run on the 2nd of the following month, randomly reordering all applicants. 
• The top 750 entries (in groups of 15) each receive a timeslot to log in and book an itinerary. 
• Timeslots occur five times daily (8am, 10am, noon, 2pm, and 4pm MST) over ten days. Earlier timeslots have significantly better chances of getting a desirable itinerary. 
• Remaining applicants after the top 750 can view and reserve leftover availability around the 20th of the month. 
• After the timeslot month ends, all remaining spots open to the public (those who didn’t apply in the permit lottery).

In short, it’s tough to get a permit. There are thousands of applications for the most competitive months in spring and fall. Even when an applicant is lucky enough to win a timeslot, Corridor campsites are the quickest to be snapped up. There’s no guarantee that a workable itinerary will be available by the time your timeslot opens, and even less guarantee that a workable itinerary will be available within a specific set of dates in the permit month. 

At Dreamland, we have created a Pre-Permit Reservation System to account for the uncertainty with as much clarity as possible. When you sign up, you’ll sign up for the first day of your trip month, rather than specific dates within the month. 

You can let us know your ideal date range when you book, and we’ll do our best to get permits as close to that date range as we can. Just be prepared for the reality that any permit we secure may fall anywhere in the trip month. If we can’t get a permit that works for you, we have a built-in set of next steps.

Getting a permit is a challenge – no two ways about it. Fortunately, Dreamland’s Rim-to-Rim Pre-Permit Reservation gives you peace of mind in the application process, and provides a number of options depending on permit success. 

When you reserve your pre-permit spot, we’ll manage the entire permit process from start to finish. We’ll take care of all the logistics, all of the red tape, and all of the requirements so that you don’t have to. Whether or not our application for your permit is successful, we have built-in options in place to make your reservation process as clear and smooth as possible.

Securing Your Own Permit

Some guests like to try for permits on their own. If you secure your own Rim-to-Rim permit through Recreation.gov, you can still book a private guided trip with Dreamland. If you plan to try for your own permit, the most important detail to note is that commercial staff (guides & porters) must be included on the permit. 

When applying, be sure to include the guides in your total group count. Park regulations have set a guest-to-guide ratio of 5:1. This impacts the group size on your permit, as well as the campsites that you can reserve. Grand Canyon campgrounds have small group sites (1-6 people) and large group sites (7-11 people).

Side Note: Phantom Ranch Reservations

Phantom Ranch is the only lodge inside the Canyon, offering rustic cabins and limited meals near Bright Angel Campground. 

Phantom Ranch operates a completely separate lottery system, not connected to Recreation.gov and not part of the backcountry permit lottery. Entries for Phantom Ranch reservations are accepted between the 1st and 25th of the 15th month before your desired stay. Winners are notified the 14th month before arrival, and any remaining space opens for general booking in the 13th month. 

Dreamland does not apply for Phantom Ranch reservations, but guests who secure their own stays are welcome to book a private guided trip. Just remember to include your guides in the reservation count for both lodging and meals, using the same 5:1 ratio detailed in the table above. 

Helpful tip: If you have Phantom Ranch reservations, you can combine them with a backcountry overnight permit itinerary through Recreation.gov. As competitive as both lotteries are, it’s tough to pull this off, but some of our guests have done it.
